Trong project oil & gas, hai tiêu chuẩn API thường được nhắc đến cho van isolation: API 6D và API 6A. Nghe giống nhau, đều là tiêu chuẩn từ American Petroleum Institute, đều dùng cho hydrocarbon service. Nhưng chúng phục vụ 2 môi trường hoàn toàn khác — và spec sai tiêu chuẩn = van fail audit, sai certificate, hoặc tệ hơn, fail trong vận hành.
Bài này giải thích sự khác nhau cơ bản: design basis, pressure rating, vật liệu, testing — và quyết định khi nào dùng cái nào.
1. Phạm Vi Áp Dụng — Khác Nhau Đầu Tiên

Quy tắc đơn giản:
- Van giữa giếng và pipeline trunk (wellhead, Christmas tree, manifold) → API 6A
- Van trên pipeline trunk hoặc pipeline downstream (transport, distribution, station) → API 6D
2. API 6A — Wellhead & Christmas Tree
API 6A bao phủ cụm equipment tại đầu giếng:
- Wellhead — thân equipment kết nối giếng với surface
- Christmas tree — cụm valve trên wellhead: master valve, wing valve, swab valve, choke
- Crossover / adapter flanges
- Surface safety valve (SSV) / Underwater safety valve (USV)
Đặc điểm thiết kế
- Pressure rating: PSL 1, 2, 3, 3G, 4 (Product Specification Level) — PSL 3G là "G" cho gas service, PSL 4 cho highest scrutiny
- Operating pressure: lên đến 20,000 psi (20K class) — cao hơn nhiều API 6D
- Temperature: -75°F to 350°F (typical); LL/X classes cho extreme
- Material classes: AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, HH — chỉ định carbon vs Cr-Mo vs Ni-Cr-Mo vs CRA
- Material trim: API 6A bắt buộc consider H₂S, CO₂, chloride → NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance
Testing bắt buộc
- Hydrostatic shell test
- Hydrostatic seat test
- Gas seat test (cho gas service)

- API 6A monogram traceability — mỗi van có serial number tracked
Khi nào dùng
- Upstream oil & gas — exploration, production
- Wellhead offshore platform (Bạch Hổ, Đại Hùng, Cá Tầm) hoặc onshore wellpad
- Subsea trees (SSTREE) — specialty class
- Sour service (H₂S > 0.05 psi partial pressure) — NACE MR0175 mandatory
3. API 6D — Pipeline & Piping
API 6D bao phủ valve trên pipeline + piping system:
- Pipeline trunk line (oil/gas transport)
- Pipeline station — pumping/compressor station, pigging launcher/receiver
- Pipeline-to-facility connection (terminal, refinery inlet)
- Distribution pipeline (gas đến city gate)
Đặc điểm thiết kế
- Pressure rating: ASME Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500 (≈ to 6,000 psi for Class 2500)
- Temperature: -29°C to 200°C (standard); special class cho LT/HT
- Bore options: Full bore (cho pigging) hoặc reduced bore (cost optimization)
- End connection: RF, RTJ, BW (butt weld), threaded — phụ thuộc class
- Operator: manual, gear, pneumatic, electric, hydraulic
- Fire-safe mandatory cho hydrocarbon service per API 607
Testing bắt buộc
- Hydrostatic shell test (1.5× design pressure)
- Hydrostatic seat test
- Pneumatic seat test (cho gas service)
- High-pressure gas test (some categories)

5. Practical Examples — Quyết Định Đúng
Example 1: Offshore platform Bạch Hổ Christmas tree replacement
- Vị trí: wellhead trên platform
- Service: raw oil + associated gas + sand + low H₂S
- Pressure: 5,000 psi vận hành
- Quyết định: API 6A 10K class, material BB (Cr-Mo), NACE compliant
- Sai lầm thường gặp: spec API 6D 1500# → không đủ pressure rating, không có wellhead-specific testing
Example 2: Pipeline gas Nam Côn Sơn — pigging launcher
- Vị trí: onshore pigging station
- Service: processed sales gas, sweet
- Pressure: 1,500 psi
- Quyết định: API 6D Class 600, full-bore ball valve, fire-safe
- Sai lầm: spec API 6A 5K → over-spec, gấp 3-4 lần chi phí, không phù hợp pigging
Example 3: Refinery Nghi Sơn inlet from pipeline
- Vị trí: terminal đầu refinery
- Service: crude oil từ pipeline
- Quyết định: API 6D Class 600 hoặc 900 (theo pipeline rating)
- Note: sau refinery inlet, valve trong process unit theo ASME B16.34 thường là đủ (không cần API 6D nữa)

7. Sai Lầm Thường Gặp Trong RFQ
- Spec "API 6D/6A" both — không hiểu chúng exclusive. Phải pick 1 theo vị trí van.
- Không quy định PSL level cho API 6A — vendor default PSL 1, owner muốn PSL 3 → reject sau khi nhận
- Quên fire-safe API 607 cho API 6D hydrocarbon — bắt buộc nhưng hay quên
- Không quy định NACE MR0175 cho sour service — material không đủ → SSC fail
- Mix pipeline pressure class với wellhead pressure class — Class 2500 (API 6D) ≠ 5K class (API 6A)
8. Quy Trình Đúng Khi RFQ
- Xác định vị trí van trong process flow — upstream wellhead hay downstream pipeline?
- Chọn tiêu chuẩn: API 6A nếu wellhead/tree, API 6D nếu pipeline
- Spec pressure rating đúng hệ (PSL 1-4 cho 6A, Class 150-2500 cho 6D)
- Spec material class (AA-HH cho 6A) hoặc material grade (A105, WCB, F22 cho 6D)
- Add service requirements: NACE MR0175 (sour), fire-safe API 607, fugitive API 641
- Specify testing & documentation — material cert EN 10204 3.1 standard

Kết Luận
API 6D và API 6A không thay thế nhau. API 6A = wellhead, raw well fluid, high pressure (up to 20K). API 6D = pipeline, processed hydrocarbon, ASME class rating. Sai tiêu chuẩn = van không pass audit hoặc fail vận hành.
