Năm 2025, Việt Nam sẽ commission LNG terminal đầu tiên ở Sơn Mỹ (Bình Thuận, công suất 1.5 MTPA). Cấp van LNG: -162°C, áp suất 25-110 bar. Sau đó là Hải Phong (Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, 3 MTPA), Cà Mau (2 MTPA), Quảng Trị. Tổng investment 2025-2030 dự kiến $8 billion — riêng cryogenic valve có thể chiếm 8-12% CapEx.
Đến 2030, Vietnam Hydrogen Strategy commits cho 100+ kt/year green H₂ production. Trong số đó, liquefied hydrogen storage (LH₂ -253°C, near absolute zero) sẽ là technical frontier. Cryogenic valve cho LH₂ là một level khó hơn LNG nhiều lần.
Bài này dành cho project engineer + procurement team đang prep cho LNG/H₂ projects trong 5-10 năm tới. Cryogenic không phải "ball valve cũ thêm extended bonnet" — đó là tech segment riêng biệt với standard riêng.
Cryogenic Service — Định Nghĩa Chính Xác
NACE / API định nghĩa cryogenic = operating temperature ≤ -50°C.
Common cryogenic fluids:
- LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas, mostly CH₄): -162°C @ 1 atm
- LIN (Liquid Nitrogen): -196°C
- LOX (Liquid Oxygen): -183°C
- LAR (Liquid Argon): -186°C
- CO₂ slush: -78°C (dry ice point)
- Ethylene (liquefied): -104°C
- Propylene (liquefied): -48°C (cryogenic-adjacent)
- LH₂ (Liquid Hydrogen): -253°C
- LHe (Liquid Helium): -269°C (research only)
Mỗi medium có quirk riêng. LNG khá benign về chemistry. LOX cực kỳ reactive (oil contamination = explosion risk). LH₂ có ortho-para conversion gây thermal runaway.
6 Thách Thức Kỹ Thuật
1. Material Brittleness — Charpy Impact Test
Ở -150°C trở xuống, hầu hết steel mất ductility — chuyển từ ductile sang brittle. Một va đập nhỏ có thể tạo crack lan ngang.
Material acceptable:
- A350 LF2 (-46°C, Class 1-2)
- A350 LF3 (-101°C, normalized + tempered)
- A352 LCB (-46°C cast)
- A352 LCC (-46°C cast)
- A350 LF6 (-95°C)
- A352 LC3 (-101°C cast)
- A352 LC9 (-196°C cast, 9% nickel) — LNG standard
- 316L stainless (-196°C → -255°C, austenitic)
- 316LN (low carbon, nitrogen-strengthened) cho cryogenic + high pressure
- Inconel 625 cho LH₂ + LHe service (cực hiếm)
Charpy V-notch impact test mandatory at minimum operating temperature:
- LNG (-162°C) → test at -196°C (over-spec margin)
- LH₂ (-253°C) → test at -269°C (boil-off helium)
Threshold: minimum 27 J energy absorbed per ASME B31.3.
2. Extended Bonnet — Mandatory
Stem packing không thể chịu được cryogenic temperature. Graphite freezes brittle, elastomer cracks, lubricant solidifies.
Solution: extended bonnet — column between body và packing area, để packing operate ở ambient temperature (gas column inside acts as thermal break).
Spec:
- Bonnet length: minimum 8× stem diameter (BS 6364, ISO 28921 standard)
- Material: same as body (LCC, F22, 316L)
- Insulation: NO insulation on bonnet (need heat dissipation upward)
- Packing area temperature: target ≤ 60°C with system at -196°C
VELAN cryogenic series có extended bonnet 9-12× stem diameter — exceed standard, allow safety margin.
3. Cavity Pressure Relief
Khi cryogenic liquid trapped trong valve body cavity (between disc và seat, after closure), thermal expansion as liquid warms tạo massive pressure spike — có thể 5-10× system pressure.
Khắc phục:
- Self-relieving seat (one-way pressure relief)
- Hole drilled in ball (downstream relief)
- External relief valve kết nối body cavity
Spec luôn yêu cầu "trapped cavity relief design per API 6D Appendix F" hoặc equivalent.
4. Fire Safe — BS 6364 / API 607
Cryogenic valve vẫn phải fire safe. Thậm chí more critical: LNG tank rupture + ignition = catastrophic.
Standard:
- BS 6364: cryogenic valve fire test
- API 607: fire test cho quarter-turn valve
- ISO 10497: fire-type testing valve
Test procedure: valve installed pressurized, exposed flame 760°C × 30 min, then water spray, then leak test.
Acceptable leakage: < 100 ml/min external (per BS 6364).
Spec phải explicit: "BS 6364 fire safe test certificate required, 3rd-party witnessed (TÜV/Lloyd's)".
5. Seat Material — Shrinkage Issue
Soft seat (PTFE, RPTFE) shrinks ở cryogenic temperature. Coefficient of thermal contraction: PTFE ~6× nhiều hơn 316L.
Hậu quả: seat retracts khỏi sealing position → leak when cold.
Solution:
- Spring-loaded seat insert (Belleville washer behind seat ring)
- Metal-to-metal seat (cho larger sizes / higher pressure)
- Reinforced PCTFE (Kel-F) — better cryogenic behavior than PTFE
- PEEK seat (cho high-pressure cryogenic + erosion)
Cho LH₂ (-253°C), PTFE absolutely cannot be used. Must metal seat hoặc PEEK.
6. Cycle / Thermal Shock
LNG terminal valve cycle nhiều: 50-200 cycles/year. Mỗi cycle = 200K thermal swing (-162°C → ambient).
Material cyclic fatigue:
- 316L stainless: 50,000+ thermal cycles before crack initiation
- A352 LC9 (9% Ni): 30,000+ cycles
- Carbon steel (LCB): NOT recommended cho cycle service
Spec extended bonnet design cũng yêu cầu finite-element analysis (FEA) cho thermal stress concentration.

Common Mistakes Vietnam Projects
Mistake #1: Spec "cryogenic ball valve" mà không specify minimum operating temperature. Cryogenic = -50°C to -269°C — huge range. Phải explicit.
Mistake #2: Dùng A350 LF2 cho LNG service. LF2 chỉ down to -46°C, không phải -162°C. Phải LF3 hoặc LC9.
Mistake #3: Không test fire safe. Cryogenic + flammable (LNG) = explosion hazard. BS 6364 cert phải có.
Mistake #4: Spec PTFE seat cho LNG. PTFE shrinks ở -162°C → leak. Phải metal seat hoặc spring-loaded.
Mistake #5: Insulate bonnet. Insulation traps heat upward → packing area lạnh → packing failure. Bonnet phải để bare.
Mistake #6: Không có cavity relief. Trapped cryogenic liquid warms → pressure spike → body rupture. Critical mistake.

Cho project FEED/detailed design 2025-2030:
- Early engagement: cryogenic valve lead time 32-48 weeks. Engage MVT từ FEED phase.
- Material spec early: A352 LC9 vs 316L decision affects budget significantly.
- Pre-qualification: VELAN, KITZ, KSB, Velan are tier-1. Avoid tier-3 brands cho cryogenic.
- Witness inspection: budget for 3rd-party inspection (TÜV, Lloyd's) at factory.
- Spare parts strategy: stock 5-10% critical spares locally.
Kết Luận
Cryogenic valve không phải "thêm extended bonnet vào valve thường". Đó là material engineering + thermal analysis + fire safety + cavity relief — đồng thời. Spec sai 1 component → catastrophic risk.
